Vopak Europoort onderzoekt of het gebruik kan maken van de walstroominstallatie van Rotterdam Shore Power op de Landtong Rozenburg. Rond de zomer moet duidelijk zijn of dit mogelijk is.

Eneco en het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam hebben, verenigd in Rotterdam Shore Power BV, een walstroominstallatie op de Landtong Rozenburg gerealiseerd. In het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar zal die in gebruik worden genomen en zullen offshore schepen van Heerema daar hun dieselgeneratoren uitzetten en op walstroom draaien.

Vopak Europoort

De terminal van Vopak Europoort ligt ter hoogte van de walstroominstallatie aan de andere kant van het Calandkanaal. Daardoor ligt walstroom binnen handbereik van de terminal. Eneco en het havenbedrijf hebben met Vopak Europoort afgesproken het gebruik van walstroom op de terminal te onderzoeken. 

Technische uitdagingen

Het is niet vanzelfsprekend dat het onderzoek positief uitvalt. Grote tankers – het soort schepen dat bij de terminal aanmeert – maken wereldwijd niet of nauwelijks van walstroom gebruik. Het aansluiten van deze schepen op walstroom kent een aantal technische uitdagingen, waarvoor in het haalbaarheidsonderzoek een oplossing wordt gezocht. Misschien leidt dit tot een internationale standaard, is de verwachting.

Emissiereducties

Veiligheid en de technische en economische haalbaarheid staan bij het onderzoek centraal, benadrukt het havenbedrijf: “Wat is er nodig om het te realiseren, wat kost het en wat levert het op?” Managing director Timo Spaninks van Vopak Europoort is blij met deze stap: “We zijn erg enthousiast over het samen met onze partners uitwerken van het concept. Vopak Europoort examines shore power connection

Vopak Europoort is investigating whether it can make use of Rotterdam Shore Power’s shore power installation on the Rozenburg peninsula. Around the summer it should be clear whether this is possible.

Eneco and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, united in Rotterdam Shore Power BV, have realized a shore-based power installation on the Rozenburg peninsula. In the first quarter of this year it will be put into operation and Heerema’s offshore vessels will switch off their diesel generators there and run on shore power.

Vopak Europoort

The terminal of Vopak Europoort is located near the shore power installation on the other side of the Calandkanaal. Therefore, shore power is within reach of the terminal. Eneco and the Port Authority have agreed with Vopak Europoort that the use of shore-base power at the terminal will be investigated. 

Technical challenges

It is not self-evident that the investigation will be positive. Large tankers – the type of ships that dock at the terminal – make little or no use of shore power worldwide. Connecting these ships to shore power has a number of technical challenges, for which a solution is being sought in the feasibility study. Perhaps this will lead to an international standard, is the expectation.

Emission reductions

Safety and the technical and economic feasibility are central to the study, emphasizes the Port Authority: “What is needed to realize it, what does it cost and what does it yield?
