Op de landtong Rozenburg is de walstroominstallatie voor twee offshore schepen in gebruik genomen. Hierdoor wordt er jaarlijks 15.000 ton minder CO2 uitgestoten. Dankzij de walstroom valt ook een bron van geluidsoverlast voor omwonenden weg.

De offshore schepen Sleipnir en Thialf van Heerema Marine Contractors zijn overgestapt op het gebruik van walstroom. Hiervoor werkt Heerema samen met Eneco en het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam. De walstroominstallatie stelt de schepen in staat hun motoren uit te schakelen als ze zijn aangemeerd. Dit scheelt 25.000 liter diesel per dag en op jaarbasis 15.000 ton aan CO2-uitstoot. 

Walstroom

De walstroominstallatie voorziet de schepen van elektriciteit die even verderop op de landtong door windturbines van Eneco worden opgewekt. De installatie heeft een capaciteit van 20 megawatt, wat het energie-equivalent is van zo’n 15.000 huishoudens. 

Doelstelling

“Dit project is het resultaat van een uitstekende samenwerking en hard werken van alle betrokkenen”, verklaart ceo Koos-Jan Brouwershaven van Heerema. “Duurzaamheid staat hoog op de agenda bij Heerema en dat maken we waar door sinds 2020 CO2-neutraal te zijn. Elk jaar, vanaf nu tot en met 2026, hebben we onze beoogde emissiereducties bepaald en door het aansluiten op walstroom verminderen we onze totale impact met vijf procent, waarmee we voldoen aan onze doelstelling voor het eerste jaar!”

Heerema offshore ships on shore power

On the Rozenburg peninsula, the shore-based power installation for two offshore ships has been taken into use. This reduces CO2 emissions by 15,000 tonnes annually. It also eliminates a source of noise pollution for local residents.

The offshore ships Sleipnir and Thialf of Heerema Marine Contractors have switched to shore-based power. Heerema is working together with Eneco and the Port of Rotterdam Authority for this. The shore-based power installation enables the ships to switch off their engines when moored. This will save 25,000 litres of diesel a day and 15,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

Wind turbines

The quayside electricity installation provides the ships with electricity that is generated by Eneco’s wind turbines a little further down the road on the peninsula. The installation has a capacity of 20 megawatts, which is the energy equivalent of about 15,000 households.

Target

“This project is the result of excellent cooperation and hard work from everyone involved”, explains Heerema’s CEO Koos-Jan Brouwershaven. “Sustainability is high on the agenda at Heerema and we are living up to that promise by being CO2 neutral since 2020. Each year, from now until 2026, we have set our target emission reductions and by connecting to shore power we are reducing our overall impact by 5 percent, thus meeting our target for the first year!”
