Op de Tweede Maasvlakte gaat Maersk 185.000 vierkante meter terrein huren. Het wil er een crossdock en coldstore bouwen.

Maersk maakt bekend een 185.000 vierkante meter groot logistiek terrein te gaan huren aan de uiterste zuidpunt van de Amaliahaven op de Tweede Maasvlakte. Maersk gaat er een 23.000 vierkante meter groot crossdock en een 35.000 vierkante meter grote coldstore bouwen.

Crossdock en coldstore

In een crossdock worden fast moving consumer goods voor korte tijd opgeslagen. In de coldstore worden agrofoodproducten overgeslagen, zoals bevroren vlees, vis, groenten en vers fruit. “Als het crossdock en de coldstore eenmaal operationeel zijn, zullen ze veel toegevoegde waarde in de keten kunnen leveren voor onze klanten. Zo kunnen zij sneller reageren op marktschommelingen, hun CO2-voetafdruk verkleinen en de doorlooptijd verkorten. Ook kunnen we onze klanten ondersteunen bij het verminderen van hun veiligheidsvoorraad”, aldus Jens Ole Krenzien, vice president Maersk North West Continent.

Dringend nodig

De logistieke faciliteiten zullen in 2023 worden opgeleverd. Het bewuste terrein was al gereserveerd voor containeroverslag door APMT, dat onderdeel is van Maersk. “De gekoelde overslag-locatie die nu in 2023 beschikbaar komt, biedt vervoerders de mogelijkheid om tijdelijk hun lading in grote aantallen veilig, overzichtelijk en indien nodig gekoeld op te slaan en te verwerken. Dat was dringend nodig”, verklaart Rolf Nielsen, head of hub APMT. 

Verdubbelen

Volgens Nielsen heeft het bedrijf de intentie om de capaciteit van de APM-terminal op de Tweede Maasvlakte te verdubbelen. “Concrete plannen voor die uitbreiding en de daarbij noodzakelijke transformatie worden momenteel intensief en zorgvuldig met de vakbonden en ondernemingsraad besproken en waar nodig verbeterd. Hopelijk ligt er dan voor eind maart een concreet plan waar alle betrokken partijen hun steun aan kunnen verlenen. Het zal ons in staat stellen om begin 2026 eindelijk op volle kracht te kunnen opereren.”

Large numbers

The logistics facilities will be completed in 2023. The site in question was already reserved for container handling by APMT, which is part of Maersk. “The refrigerated transhipment site that will now become available in 2023 offers carriers the opportunity to temporarily store and process their cargo in large numbers safely, conveniently and, if necessary, in a refrigerated environment. This was urgently needed”, explains Rolf Nielsen, Head of Hub APMT.

Double the capacity

According to Nielsen, the company intends to double the capacity of the APM Terminal on Maasvlakte 2. “Concrete plans for that expansion and the transformation it will require are currently being discussed intensively and carefully with the unions and the works council, and improved where necessary. Hopefully, by the end of March there will be a concrete plan that all parties involved can support. It will enable us to finally operate at full capacity in early 2026.”
