Het lastigste bij plasticrecycling is het sorteren van de verschillende soorten plastic uit afvalstromen. Urban Mining Corp heeft hiervoor een oplossing bedacht. Merwe-Vierhavens

Het bedrijf wil in het Rotterdamse Merwe-Vierhavens een fabriek bouwen, waar uit plastic afval grondstof voor plasticproducenten wordt gewonnen. In 2022 moet de installatie draaien. Dan ontstaat er volgens het bedrijf een gesloten grondstoffenkring: van plastic naar afval naar grondstof. Mede hierdoor zal er minder behoefte zijn aan plastics die uit fossiele grondstoffen worden gemaakt.

Opschaling

Het Energietransitiefonds Rotterdam draagt 6 miljoen euro bij aan de investering in de fabriek. Het is de eerste grote investering sinds het fonds in 2020 werd opgericht. InvestNL investeert 9 miljoen euro in het project. “Opschaling stelt ons in staat onze impact te vergroten en een cruciale bijdrage te leveren aan de uitdagingen op het gebied van recycling. De investering bewijst het vertrouwen in onze aanpak van plastic recycling en helpt ons de volgende stap te zetten in de uitrol in Nederland en daarbuiten”, zegt Jaap Vandehoek van Urban Mining Corp.

The company wants to build a factory in Merwe-Vierhavens, Rotterdam, where plastic waste will be used as raw material for plastic producers. The plant must be operational in 2022. According to the company, this will create a closed raw materials cycle: from plastic to waste to raw material. Partly because of this, there will be less need for plastics made from fossil raw materials.

First major investment

The Energietransitiefonds Rotterdam contributes €6 million to the investment in the plant. It is the first major investment since the fund was set up in 2020.
