Wethouder Arno Bonte (duurzaamheid) heeft bij Plant One in Rotterdam een innovatieve plastic-recyclinginstallatie geopend. Dankzij het gebruik van een oplosmiddel kunnen plastics tot een nieuwe, zuivere grondstof worden verwerkt.

De recyclinginstallatie is ook in staat om plasticfolies te verwerken. Deze staan bekend als slecht recyclebaar. Tot voor kort konden plasticfolies alleen laagwaardig worden verwerkt tot bijvoorbeeld bermpaaltjes of deze werden verband. 

Plastic-recyclinginstallatie

Dankzij de recyclinginstallatie van OBBOTEC vallen deze plastics hoogwaardig te recyclen. Volgens de bedenker van dit concept is het rendement van het recyclen bijna honderd procent, omdat alleen verontreinigingen en andere plastics eruit worden gehaald. 

Granulaat

“Onze Selectieve Plastic Extractie (SPEX) is een innovatieve chemische kunststofrecyclingtechnologie gebaseerd op solvolyse”, legt Wouter van Neerbos van OBBOTEC uit. Diederik Jaspers, eveneens van OBBOTEC vervolgt: “SPEX kan een mix van afvalplastics omzetten in – bijna – ‘virgin’ granulaat, omdat het alle verontreinigingen uit plastic verwijdert. Verontreinigingen zoals geur- en kleurstoffen, coatings en weekmakers. Dit in tegenstelling tot de huidige mechanische recycling waarbij de verontreiniging niet wordt verwijderd.”

Commerciële installatie

Volgens Bonte verbruikt de installatie ook minder energie. “We besparen dus grondstoffen en perken de CO2-uitstoot drastisch in.” De recyclinginstallatie is mogelijk gemaakt met  financiële steun van het Rotterdams Energie Transitie Budget en subsidie van EU REACT. In het komende halfjaar wordt de installatie getest. Dit moet begin 2023 leiden tot een investering in een eerste commerciële installatie, die 5.000 tot 10.000 afvalplastics kan verwerken.

Innovative plastic recycling plant opened

Alderman Arno Bonte (sustainability) has opened an innovative plastic recycling plant at Plant One in Rotterdam. Thanks to the use of a solvent, plastics can be processed into a new, pure raw material.

The recycling installation is also capable of processing plastic films. These are known to be difficult to recycle. Until recently, plastic films could only be processed in a low-grade manner into, for example, roadside bollards or they were bandaged.

Almost one hundred percent

Thanks to OBBOTEC’s recycling installation, these plastics can now be recycled at a high level. According to the inventor of this concept, the recycling yield is almost one hundred percent, because only contaminants and other plastics are extracted.

Granulate

“Our Selective Plastic Extraction (SPEX) is an innovative chemical plastic recycling technology based on solvolysis”, explains Wouter van Neerbos from OBBOTEC. Diederik Jaspers, also from OBBOTEC continues: “SPEX can convert a mix of waste plastics into – almost – ‘virgin’ granulate, because it removes all contaminants from plastic. Contaminants such as odouring and colouring agents, coatings and plasticisers. This is in contrast to current mechanical recycling, which does not remove the impurities.”

Commercial installation

According to Bonte, the installation also consumes less energy. “We therefore save raw materials and drastically reduce CO2 emissions.” The recycling plant has been made possible with financial support from the Rotterdam Energy Transition Budget and a grant from EU REACT. The installation will be tested in the coming six months. This should lead to an investment in a first commercial installation, capable of processing 5,000 to 10,000 waste plastics, in early 2023.
