De Nederlandse industrie laat energiebesparingskansen lopen, stelt Natuur & Milieu. Door op verschillende manieren zuiniger met energie om te gaan, kan 1,5 miljard m3 aardgas worden bespaard. 

In opdracht van de milieuorganisatie heeft onderzoeksbureau Berenschot de energiebesparingsmogelijkheden voor de industrie onderzocht. Daaruit blijkt dat op verschillende manieren 1,5 miljard aardgas kan worden bespaard. Dit is evenveel als het verbruik van zo’n 1,2 miljoen huishoudens, aldus Natuur & Milieu.

“Door middel van een aantal ingrepen is het aardgasverbruik in elk geval 16 procent omlaag te brengen. Hiervoor hoeft niet eens het productieproces te worden stilgelegd. Het is echt laaghangend fruit. Bovendien is het in het kader van de uitgebreide energiebesparingswetgeving vanaf volgend jaar voor alle bedrijven verplicht”, zegt Rob van Tilburg, directeur programma’s bij de milieuorganisatie.

‘Snel rendabel’

Alleen al het hergebruik van warmte in de industrie kan een besparing op het aardgas opleveren als het totale aardgasverbruik van alle huishoudens in de provincie Utrecht, stelt Natuur & Milieu. Van Tilburg: “Energiebesparing moet nu eindelijk topprioriteit krijgen. Met de hoge gasprijzen is het nu heel snel rendabel al het technisch potentieel aan besparing te verzilveren. Dit leidt tot een structurelere verduurzaming dan het tijdelijk stilleggen van productieprocessen, zoals nu gebeurt vanwege de gascrisis. De relatief eenvoudige ingrepen snel doorvoeren is het minste wat de industrie nu kan doen. Zo worden we minder afhankelijk van aardgas én stoten we minder CO2 uit.” Volgens het onderzoek komt de totale CO2-besparing op korte termijn op 2,6 Mton uit, als ‘een combinatie van maatregelen’ wordt genomen.

Industry misses out on energy-saving opportunities’

The Dutch industry is missing out on energy saving opportunities, argues Natuur & Milieu. By using energy more efficiently in various ways, 1.5 billion m3 of natural gas could be saved.

“Through a number of interventions, natural gas consumption can be reduced by at least 16 per cent. This does not even require shutting down the production process. It really is low-hanging fruit. ‘Quickly profitable’

The reuse of heat in industry alone could save as much as the total natural gas consumption of all households in the province of Utrecht, Natuur & Milieu argues. Van Tilburg: “Energy saving must finally be given top priority. With high gas prices, it is now very quickly profitable to cash in on all the technical potential savings. This leads to more structural sustainability than temporarily shutting down production processes, as is happening now because of the gas crisis. Implementing relatively simple interventions quickly is the least the industry can do now. This way, we will become less dependent on natural gas ánd emit less CO2.” According to the study, the total CO2 savings in the short term comes to 2.6 Mtonne if “a combination of measures” is taken.
