Vanuit Noorwegen zullen grote hoeveelheden blauwe ammoniak naar Rotterdam worden verscheept. Het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam heeft hiervoor een overeenkomst gesloten met Horisont Energi.

Het Noorse bedrijf Horisont Energi hoopt eind volgend jaar de definitieve investeringsbeslissing te nemen voor het Barents Blue-project. Hierbij wordt blauwe ammoniak gemaakt van aardgas. De vrijkomende CO2 wordt afgevangen en opgeslagen. De productiecapaciteit bedraagt 3.000 ton per dag, ofwel 1 miljoen ton per jaar.

Blauwe ammoniak

Met het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam heeft Horisont Energi een memorandum of understanding afgesloten voor het verschepen van blauwe ammoniak van Noord-Noorwegen naar Rotterdam. Vanuit de Rotterdamse haven kan het worden getransporteerd naar afnemers in Noordwest-Europa. Ammoniak is een efficiënte waterstofdrager. Ook is het een grondstof voor de chemie en productie van kunstmest.

Groen en blauw

“Er is een belangrijke rol weggelegd voor blauwe waterstof als we de internationale klimaatambities willen realiseren. Dit komt doordat er vooral in de komende jaren te weinig groene waterstof beschikbaar is om in de vraag te voorzien. We hebben elke mogelijke oplossing nodig. Daarom focussen we niet alleen op groen, maar ook op blauw, zoals we ook niet alleen naar lokale productie kijken maar ook naar import”, aldus Nico van Dooren, director new business van het havenbedrijf.

Blue ammonia from Norway to Rotterdam

Large quantities of blue ammonia will be shipped from Norway to Rotterdam. The Port of Rotterdam Authority has concluded an agreement for this with Horisont Energi.

The Norwegian company Horisont Energi hopes to make the final investment decision for the Barents Blue project at the end of next year. This involves making blue ammonia from natural gas. The CO2 that is released is captured and stored. Production capacity is 3,000 tonnes per day, or 1 million tonnes per year.

This is because, especially in the coming years, there will be too little green hydrogen available to meet demand. We need every possible solution.
