Air Liquide, Air Products, ExxonMobil en Shell hebben definitieve contracten met Porthos getekend voor het transport en de opslag van CO2.

Het tekenen van de definitieve contracten geldt als een mijlpaal in het project. De vier bedrijven gaan vanaf 2024 samen jaarlijks 2,5 Mton CO2 van hun installaties in Rotterdam afvangen. Via de pijpleidingen van Porthos wordt de CO2 naar een leeg gasveld op 20 kilometer van de kust getransporteerd. Daar wordt het op circa 3 kilometer diepte opgeslagen.

Contracten

Het wachten is nu nog op de vergunningen voor Porthos. Vervolgens – waarschijnlijk komend voorjaar – zal een definitieve beslissing volgen voor de aanleg van het project. Voor Porthos moeten een pijpleiding op land, een compressorstation, een pijpleiding op zee en een aanpassing van een platform op zee worden gerealiseerd. Dit zal ongeveer twee jaar duren. Ondertussen bouwen de vier bedrijven CO2-afvang-installaties.

Porthos customers sign contracts

Air Liquide, Air Products, ExxonMobil and Shell have signed final contracts with Porthos. The companies will become customers of the CO2 transport and storage system.

The signing of the final contracts marks a milestone in the project. Starting in 2024, the four companies will together capture 2.5 Mton CO2 annually from their Rotterdam facilities. Via Porthos pipelines, the CO2 will be transported to an empty gas field 20 kilometres off the coast. There, it will be stored at a depth of about 3 kilometres.

Permits

We are now waiting for the permits for Porthos. After that – probably next spring – a final decision must be made regarding the construction of the project. For Porthos, a pipeline on land, a compressor station, a pipeline at sea and an adaptation of a platform at sea must be realised. This will take approximately two years. Meanwhile, the four companies are building CO2 capture installations.
