Een consortium van scheepseigenaren, werven en offshore bedrijven heeft een subsidie van 24 miljoen euro ontvangen. Hiermee kan het gebruik van methanol als brandstof in de scheepvaart worden onderzocht.

Het consortium draagt de naam Menens (Methanol als energiestap naar emissieloze Nederlandse scheepvaart) en wordt gesponsord door de Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland. Dankzij een bijdrage van Boskalis, een van de deelnemers aan het consortium, is het onderzoeksbudget verhoogd naar 38 miljoen euro.

Methanol

De deelnemers aan het consortium zien methanol als een van de meest haalbare schone brandstoffen voor grootschalige toepassing in de scheepvaart. De subsidie wordt benut door op zes verschillende scheepstypen een retrofit uit te rusten om de levensvatbaarheid van methanolbrandsystemen te testen.

Net-zero-doelstelling

“Alternatieve brandstoffen zijn essentieel voor de ontwikkeling van een duurzamere maritieme industrie. Om die reden blijven wij een voortrekkersrol spelen bij initiatieven om het emissiereductiepotentieel van methanol en andere schone technologieën te onderzoeken. Dit onderzoeksprogramma naar het gebruik van methanol als koolstofarme brandstof is een volgende belangrijke stap op weg naar de verwezenlijking van de net-zero-doelstelling”, aldus Peter Berdowski, ceo van Boskalis.

24 million for research into the use of methanol in the shipping industry

A consortium of ship owners, shipyards and offshore companies has received a €24 million grant. With this, the use of methanol as fuel in shipping can be researched.

The consortium is called Menens (Methanol as an energy step towards emission-free shipping in the Netherlands) and is sponsored by the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland. Thanks to a contribution from Boskalis, one of the participants in the consortium, the research budget has been increased to €38 million.

Retrofitting

The participants in the consortium see methanol as one of the most feasible clean fuels for large-scale application in the shipping industry. The grant will be used by retrofitting six different types of ships to test the viability of methanol fuel systems.

Net-zero target

This is why we continue to lead initiatives to explore the emission reduction potential of methanol and other clean technologies.
